Our Statement on the Supreme Court’s Roe v Wade Decision
June 27th, 2022
At Impact NW, we are devastated and angry that the U.S. Supreme Court overturned nearly 50 years of precedent guaranteeing the constitutional right to an abortion, stripping Americans of a human right. Millions of people who can become pregnant in the U.S. now face a future where they will not be able to make personal choices about their bodies, their future, and their families.
The people that will suffer the most are those who are the most marginalized across the U.S. – but ultimately this decision will affect us all. This ruling is racist, classist and sexist and will result in increased struggles for people who experience systems of oppression.
Impact NW has always stood for democracy, human rights and personal freedom. Criminalizing abortion goes against these values. This will be a long battle in maintaining and restoring human rights. Because we know that when a human right is taken away, it is a threat everywhere and for everyone. And this leads to imminent possibility that other human rights can be taken away.
We are not alone in this fight. Impact NW stands in solidarity and commits to advocating for human rights, especially for people who are oppressed and whose rights are constantly under attack. We call on governments and elected officials to pass laws and policies that ensure access to abortion; safeguarding social, economic, gender, and reproductive justice for women, girls, and people who can become pregnant.
