Impact NW believes that parents are a child’s first and most important teacher…
At Impact NW, we believe that parents are the first and most important teachers of a child.
Unfortunately, many low-income parents lack the time and resources needed to fully support their child’s early growth. That’s why our Parent-Child Development Services program is here to provide the support and skills parents need to nurture their children’s learning and development.
Our program strengthens families by helping parents feel empowered to create a bright future for their children.
Through our Parent-Child Development playgroups, parents and children enjoy fun, interactive activities together while learning about nutrition, child development, and positive parenting strategies. These playgroups take place at the Brentwood-Darlington Community Center, local apartment complexes, and other locations across SE Portland.
We are proud to share that we offer services in English,Spanish, Chinese,Ukrainian and Russian to better support our diverse community.
In addition, families benefit from free home visits, immunization checks, and developmental screenings to ensure children are happy and healthy. For children aged 3 to 5, we focus on preparing them for school and helping them develop essential social skills.

Meet Parent Child Specialist: Yanting Lao

Yanting began working at Impact NW’s Parent-Child Development Services on March 20th, 2017. However, her journey into the world of supporting families didn’t begin there.
Yanting was first introduced to the field through a desire to expand her skills and knowledge. During the pandemic, she took the opportunity to return to school through online classes, where she deepened her understanding of parenting and child development. Though she wasn’t new to the world of parenthood, her education, combined with her hands-on experiences and work-related training, allowed her to provide even more support to families during home visits.
Yanting had always known the importance of continuous learning, and she quickly realized that furthering her education would enhance her ability to help others. “I wanted to increase my knowledge and abilities, both personally and professionally, and the online classes I took supported my understanding of parenting and child development,” she said. “The combination of education, training, and lived experience has allowed me to truly connect with the families I serve.”
What encouraged you to further your education, and how has that enhanced your ability to support families?
“My decision to return to school during the pandemic was driven by my desire to expand my knowledge and enhance my skills. The combination of my education and hands-on training has truly helped me support families in a more meaningful way. I feel more equipped to share insights and offer practical solutions, and it’s been incredibly fulfilling to see how much the families appreciate this support.”
Looking ahead, what are your hopes and dreams for the future, both personally and professionally?
“Personally, I want to continue focusing on my growth and learning new skills to improve my overall wellness. Professionally, my goal is to become an expert in my field and continue developing skills that help me better serve and support the families I work with. I hope to set new goals that will allow me to grow within my role and make an even greater impact on the families I work with.”
Yanting has found great satisfaction in helping families achieve their goals, no matter how small they may seem. Walking alongside families in their journeys and helping them experience even the smallest wins has been one of the most rewarding parts of her work.
