Class Leaders are needed toteach ourfun, hands-on after school science program to elementary school students. Classes are held in the Portland Metro area once or twice per week for 8-12 weeks. Each class lasts 1-2 hours and engages a maximum of 16 students. AKA Science Class Leaders receive training in innovative teaching methods and the specific activities in the curriculum. The curriculum and all supplies are provided.
We seek applicants who are passionate about education and who display a positive attitude. Previous experience with school-aged children is highly preferred. A background in science is not necessary. All applicants must be over the age of 18 and able to pass a background check. Each AKA Science site selects its own Class Leader, so applicants for this position will receive a list of any sites that are currently seeking a Class Leader ~or~ an update about when the next round of recruitment will begin.
AKA Science Kit Builder:
Kit Builders are needed to count, sort, and bundle supplies to fill the science kits for each AKA Science after-school class. It’s easy work…but with 80 kits to assemble each school term, there’s lots to do! This is a casual, low-key volunteer opportunity for anyone who enjoys organization, details, and teamwork.
Kit-building takes place at the Impact NW Dancing Tree Family Center (10055 E Burnside St., Portland, OR 97216). There’s flexibility around what time to come on a particular day, though a commitment of at least 2 hours would be great!
We seek Kit Builders who are over the age of 18 or 13+ with an adult companion. Kit Builders may be asked to sit, bend, and do light lifting, but we can provide tasks flexibly based on volunteers’ physical needs. Applicants for this position will receive a list of upcoming kit building dates and times ~or~ an update about when more dates will be scheduled.
AKA Science Library Workshop Assistant:
Library Workshop Assistants are needed to help run activity stations at 1-hour workshops for kids and families at public libraries. Each Library Workshop Assistant monitors one activity station to help children and families do a hands-on science activity. Assistants engage kids and families, answer questions, and help the event run smoothly.
We ask that Library Workshop Assistants arrive 30 minutes before the start of the workshop to assist with set-up and receive a short training on a specific activity station. Applicants for this position will receive a list of any upcoming workshops for which assistants are needed ~or~ an update about when more workshops will be scheduled.
